Paper Bag Waist Skirt with Pockets

 A while back I sewed up a dress for my little girl from Patty Young's Claudia Pattern. I loved the paper bag waist and the bow sash and the awesome rounded pockets. I wondered what it would look like for me to make an adult size skirt with the same style. It didn't take long before I gave it a shot.

 This pattern lends itself well to adaptation because the basic shape of the skirt is a rectangle and the sash is what draws the material together at the waist for fit and to create the paper bag effect. I made the portion above the waist pretty tall. It's really dramatic when worn with just a plain tank top.

The rounded pockets are really nice. I love the way they are sewn into the side seams. They have a sleek look until you need to stick your hand, phone or keys in there and then - pop! - there they are. They don't add any bulk, only style and function. The fabrics in this skirt are from Heather Bailey's Nicey Jane and Pop Garden collections. The pockets and waist casing are an older Moda fabric.
